    Dr. Sarafina El-Badry Nance

    Astrophysicist

Dr. Sarafina El-Badry Nance is an Egyptian American astrophysicist whose research develops new methods for measuring the expansion of the universe using supernovae. She earned her Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, and has conducted research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Harvard’s Center for Astrophysics, and the University of Texas at Austin, investigating supernova progenitors—most notably the fate of Betelgeuse.

Topic: From Ancient Skies to Cosmic Fireworks: Supernovae and the Expanding Universe.

In this talk, astrophysicist Dr. Sarafina El-Badry Nance takes us on a journey through the history of supernovae: from naked-eye observations preserved in ancient records and petroglyphs, including Egypt’s ancient traditions of recording and interpreting the night sky, to the cutting-edge research scientists do today to probe the life and death of stars. Along the way, she will show how these brilliant explosions have shaped our understanding of the cosmos and revealed one of the most profound discoveries in modern science—that the universe itself is expanding.

    Don Pollacco

    Astrophysicist

Don Pollacco has held the position of Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Warwick
since 2012, having previously held a similar role at Queen’s University, Belfast.

He was the co-founder and PI of the WASP Project which has been the most successful ground-based transiting Exoplanet discovery facility with some 190 discoveries to date. This has involved the development of data mining techniques to extract science from the 100GB/night of data stream from the SuperWASP cameras. The WASP project won the Royal Astronomical Society’s Team Award in 2010 and some of its earliest discoveries were ranked in the top ten in the Times/CNN ranking of scientific discoveries for 2008.

Topic: The History of Eclipses and what to expect with this one.

After witnessing 6 solar eclipses, Dr.Pollacco shares astronomical science and his enthusiastic wonder and curiosity about solar eclipses, including the ancient Egyptian eclipse and the 1927 eclipse that demonstrated that Einstein’s General Relativity theory was “correct” (positioning of stars near the solar disc during the eclipse shows that they have been “bent” by the mass of the sun).

The molecules and the atoms of the molecules in my body are traceable to stars across the galaxy that have lived their lives,

manufactured these elements, and exploded them into the universe from which new generations of star systems were formed.

So, I look up at the night sky. I don’t feel small, I feel large, I feel connected to the universe, it’s not just we here on Earth that’s there.

We are one.
